Owls. Owls. Owls.

In ancient Greece owls were a symbol of status, intelligence and wealth. In ancient Egypt and Hindu cultures it was believed that owls were the protectors of the dead. The owl was also known as the keeper of spirits and would accompany the spirits while they left the physical world and entered the spirit world.

The owl has been viewed as a messenger in places in West Africa. In Native American culture the owl is the keeper of all sacred knowledge. Suffice to say that the owl is one of the most worshiped birds of all.

We cannot seem to escape them, but why would we want to. They are the symbol of wisdom and have recently made a come-back as a must have accesory for every occasion.

Pillows. Pillows.

Things I want to make

Such a cute idea for place cards for fun events. Also cute idea for a casual restaurant.

 Directions: Chop cheese in to pieces that are a bit smaller than the tomatoes you have. Separate and rinse fresh basil leaves. Soak Panela Cheese in a mixture of Olive Oil, balsamic vinegar, S&P and a few thinly chopped fresh basil leaves. Stick on a tooth pick as shown in the picture. Serve and enjoy. You can also use regular tomatoes and chop them up in to smaller pieces or cherry tomatoes.

4. Melon and Prosciutto

Ingredients

Directions: Prepare the melon cut in little moon shaped slices, seeded and cut from the rind. Wrap the thinly sliced Prosciutto around each slice of melon. Cover and chill. Serve. Sprinkle with a little sea salt for taste. This summery appetizer pairs well with a light white wine.

My Baby Squirrel

 {First encounter}

The care for a little baby squirrel is constant and so rewarding. We've been together for one whole week now and he's doing so much better. The couple who found him named him Jinxy and I agree that it's a good fit for the little guy. Scalded milk, stimulation for urination and keeping his nest warm are part of my every day activities and will be for at least the next month. This little baby is the sweetest. He just wants to eat, sleep and go to the bathroom. He has started to grow teeth, which I can feel when he's searching for his milk during feeding time. He gets so excited and then gets so excited to curl back up in a little ball in his nest and sleep till his next feeding.

{Baby Jinxy at about 4 weeks}
{Baby Jinxy at about 5 weeks}

The one and only scary thing that I have found after reading so much about these little animals is that their teeth grow 6 inches a year! I have to make sure to keep those guys as short as possible. He's as sweet as can be right now and there are lots of success stories I have read about letting them back in to the wild and how they come back to your house to visit "their mommy." I hope Jinxy makes it outside in a couple months. He's too much of a baby right now.

This is where Jinxy lives now:

Tips & Tricks: How To Tweeze Correctly

TWEEZE, but don't over-tweeze!

When a woman walks around with messy eyebrows it's like saying to the world in a really loud voice, "I don't care." It's unpleasant for someone to walk around screaming that they don't care, right? Why on Earth would you want to be one of those people?

I suppose at one point I did not know how to deal with my eyebrows, but that was because of ignorance, not because I didn't care. This video showed me how to tweeze my eyebrows perfectly. In fact, I still watch it to refresh my memory every once in a while. Every woman has got to know how to tweeze.

In fact, this video is so "secret" that I can't even post it on my blog. You'll have to Copy/Paste this address:

Tips & Tricks: How To Get Lipstick Out

Ooooops!

When you stain your new white knitted sweater with your lipstick just as you get home from a long hard day, all the while being cautious about keeping your sweater clean. Isn't that just the worst feeling in the world? It honestly doesn't have to be anymore. My friend, Clewbear has a remedy that I didn't believe until I tried it myself.

Spray hair spray on the stained area and rub with a wash clothe in circular motions. It will come right out and you will be amazed!

Do It Yourself: Birthday Card

Making your own Birthday Card in less than 30 minutes. Take a moment to express youself and make a personalized card for a friend, family member or co-worker. It will be much more appreciated than a simple store bought card.

1.     Start by gathering what you will need: any kind of envelope, even if it is used it will do, a piece of paper (any color, even white), a magazine, scissors, glue, glitter, crayons, markers or anything else you are inspired by.
2.     Use clips from the magazine to form a theme. Remember that if you choose a color scheme and stick with it, your card will be cohesive even if it’s full of random images.
3.     Write down what you want to say and find the letters to complete your words.
4.     Place it, glue it, decorate.
5.     Since you are working with an envelope, try to keep the words on the outside of the card short and simple. Place a hand-written letter inside the envelope to make it more personal.

For a Fresh Scalp

I first tried this in my dad's bathroom. He had the shampoo and I knew that he couldn't have possibly purchased it. I was right, he didn't... his lady friend did. I went out to get one as soon as I could!

Don't even bother buying the Conditioner, unless you absolutely need it. This Shampoo alone will suffice.

Put a small amount in your hand and massage into your scalp for as long as you can. Then rinse. I recommend washing twice and only washing every second or third day. Dry with towel and brush, wrap up in towel again for 5 - 10 minutes. Remove towel, shake your hair lose and enjoy the sensation of a tingly scalp. It will last as long as your hair is wet.

Mother Nature's Medicine

Aloe vera is one of the only natural vegetarian sources of Vitamin B12 on the planet. Also the plant has vitamins A, B12, C and E, protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and essential fatty acids. Aloe vera has also been proven time and time again to boost your immune system and it also has anti-aging properties.

The plant is good for fast healing. Aloe vera has properties that accelerate the process in which the body cures itself. Growing up my mother would always put Aloe Vera on everything. In fact, to this day when I trip I think of the smell of the plant. We used to cut a slice of it off the plant and split it in two. We would place the gel on the open wound and keep it moist with the mucus. CAUTION: It tastes terrible; so do not get it in your mouth. Wash your hands well after handling it because it is truly the bitterest thing I’ve ever tasted in my life!

For best results slice the leaf down the middle and carefully cut cris-cross so that the plants juices pour. I suggest you use a spoon to scrape off the the inside. Place directly over the wound.

I like to keep an aloe vera plant in my kitchen near the sink. It livens up the area and is easy to reach in case of a sudden burn or cut, you've got a knife right there, easy access to water, although it doesn't need much. It's where it fits in my house. I'll post a picture of mine soon.

CAUTION: Be careful with the mucus that pours out - although it looks clear, it acts the same way that potatoes do! The clear liquid turns in to purple stains when it starts to dry. So don't get it on your sheets or clothes.

  • For burns: Place directly over injured area. For a more soothing effect, put the leaf in the freezer for a few minutes.
  • For skinned knee or cuts: Place directly over raw skin. Try to get as much as possible on as fast as you can. The best way to do this is to soak it and then let it air dry for a few minutes. Then soak again. Repeat as much as necessary. You will see that within hours, your body will start to form a scab before your eyes.
  • For sunburn: Remove all of the "good stuff" from the inside of the plant and rub it all over you like lotion. DO NOT sit in the sun while you do this, it will cause for a deeper burn. Stay in the shade in a cool place, under a fan. Ask someone to rub lotion on your sunburn several times. Take a cold bath and put one last layer on. Remember to wear clothes that can get stained.

Aloe vera can also be used for acne treatment. For best results, place on clean and exfoliated face as a mask, leave on for 30 minutes and rinse off with cold water before bed time. (The cold water will close your pores, as opposed to rinsing your face with hot water, which leaves your pores open).
For last minute pimples or blemishes that must vanish, pop pimple, if needed and dab some aloe on the red area. It will disappear before you know it.

A gun in your purse

Every day more and more women in my circle of friends are talking about carrying a gun. Some make good points, but I still can't kick the bad & scary feeling of walking around with a big piece of killing metal in my posession. Could you? I feel like I should learn how to shoot one - just in case, but could I live with the memory of pointing a gun and shooting.

My friend, Clewbear (I've mentioned her before) made a good point the other night while we were on the subject during one of our weekly girl night gatherings.
If a man walked in MY house and wanted to rob me - fine! but there are men who would   see a girl like me and if I were alone and they've already gone as far as breaking and entering, and they have a weapon... I would hate myself for not having a gun in my night stand. She makes a good point. With a gun, you have the power to protect yourself, your poseession and your loved ones, but you also have the power to KILL.

I'm still going back and forth in my head about it. When you are a girl who is easy on the eyes you are more vulnerable when you are walking back to your car, up to your house, or in a parking garage.

I will post another follow up thought about this once I have made up my mind about the subject.
